The Good Councillor's Guide is an essential tool for anyone new to the local council movement or for anyone wanting to refresh their knowledge of what councillors may or may not undertake.

The Guide is described as an introduction to being a local councillor and is not intended to be a definitive legal guide. It is produced by the Improvement and Development Board (IDB) whose members consist of:

  • National Association of Local Councils
  • Society of Local Council Clerks
  • Department of Communities and Local Government
  • Local Government Association
  • Individual Members

A copy of the 2018 guide is available for information and can be viewed and downloaded here.

N.B. The latest version – dated 2024 – is only available in digital format and can be viewed by those ChALC members who have set up an account and are logged into to NALC website
