The following are the guidelines set down by the National Joint Committee for the use of cars by staff and councillors (i.e. essential and casual users) for the current year. NJC car allowances 2008/09
The National Joint Council for Local Government Services has (previously)
reached agreement on the rates of car allowances payable from 1st
April 2008. As in previous
years, in response to requests from authorities, the figures below also show the
amounts of petrol element and VAT applicable to each Group – the VAT content
will differ prior to 1st December 2008.
These allowances are based on a price of 103.52p per litre (470.6p per gallon) for unleaded petrol (based on actual pump prices in the first two weeks of January [as surveyed by the Automobile Association on behalf of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders] in accordance with the jointly agreed formula for calculating the allowances each year).

paragraph 6 It has been agreed that the rates of Car Allowances be revised with effect from 1 April 2007. The new rates are set out below:
